Getting Started With Tufting
If you’re a complete beginner, we recommend starting with the Tukloom Starter Basic Kit — it includes the essential tools you need to make your first rug with confidence.
If you’re on a tighter budget, the Saver Kit gives you all the core materials at a more affordable price.
If you already understand the basics and want a smoother, more efficient setup, choose the Studio Pro Kit, which includes upgraded tools and materials.
And if you have limited workspace or need a setup that’s easy to move around, our Portable Kit is the best option.
All Tukloom tufting guns are dual-mode (cut & loop), so beginners can easily explore both textures.
The AK-Ⅰ is the best entry-level choice — stable, easy to handle, and budget-friendly.
If you prefer a lighter, quieter, and more refined experience, the upgraded AK-Ⅴ is also beginner-friendly and offers smoother operation.
For tufters with limited workspace or who need a setup that’s easy to move around, the Cordless Model provides maximum mobility without cables.
If you already have some experience and want richer, fuller textures, the Long Pile Version is ideal for advanced projects requiring plush depth.
To start tufting, these basics are enough for a complete beginner to make their first rug:
- Tufting Gun – the main tool for creating your rug.
- Primary Backing Cloth – the fabric you tuft onto.
- Wooden Tufting Frame – keeps your cloth stretched and stable.
- Acrylic Yarn – beginner-friendly and easy to tuft with.
- Threader Tool – helps you feed yarn through your gun.
- Duckbill Scissors – for trimming and shaping your design.
All Tukloom kits include these essentials — and each kit adds extra tools based on different user needs, so you’ll always have the right setup for your skill level and workspace.
Tufting Guns: Usage & Troubleshooting
Cut pile creates a soft, fluffy, raised texture — great for bold shapes, borders, and 3D effects.
Loop pile forms a tight, durable, low-profile finish — ideal for clean details and intricate patterns.
Long pile produces a thicker, deeper, more plush texture — perfect for advanced designs that require extra height or a luxurious look.
All Tukloom tufting guns can switch between cut pile and loop pile, and our Long Pile model is designed specifically for creating ultra-thick, high-pile textures.
Most issues come from setup rather than the gun itself. Here’s what to check:
- Cloth not stretched tight enough — your cloth should feel drum-tight before you start.
- Yarn tension too tight — loosen it so the yarn feeds smoothly.
- Yarn too thin or incompatible — some yarns don’t work well with tufting guns.
- Incorrect cloth type — not all fabrics are designed for tufting.
- Needle height not adjustedcorrectly — make sure the needle aligns with your pile setting.
To make things easier, all Tukloom yarns and tufting cloth are fully compatible with our guns, so you don’t have to worry about mismatched materials.
With the right cloth tension and a firm, vertical punching motion, these issues typically disappear.
Often caused by inconsistent hand movement or speed settings. Keep a steady pace and ensure the yarn feed is smooth.
Light maintenance is recommended every 2–3 hours of use. Add 2–3 drops of machine oil on the moving metal parts and keep the needle clean.
Yes. All machines include the correct adapter for your region.
Tufting Kits
All Tukloom Starter Kits come with the essential tools you need to complete your first rug from start to finish. A basic kit typically includes:
- Tufting Gun
- Primary & Secondary Backing Cloth
- Wooden Tufting Frame
- Threader Tool
- Duckbill Scissors
- Glue Spreader
- Lint Remover Brush
- A beginner-friendly yarn set
These essentials give beginners everything required to start tufting with confidence — no need to buy materials separately.
For users who want a more advanced setup, our higher-level kits add upgraded tools such as:
- A larger frame and larger cloth cuts
- More yarn colors or bigger cones
- Electric trimmers for faster finishing
- Upgraded guns like the AK-V
This way, each kit scales with your needs — from first-time tufters to users who want more efficiency, bigger canvases, or professional-level results.
For most beginners, everything you need to start tufting is already included in the Tukloom kit, so you can complete your first rug without buying anything else.
As you continue tufting, you may want to add a few optional items depending on your project:
- Additional yarn colors — for more complex or color-heavy designs.
- Extra primary or secondary backing cloth — useful if you want to make larger or multiple rugs.
- Rug glue — our kits include a glue spreader, but the glue itself is not included.
- Marker or projector — to help transfer detailed patterns onto the cloth.
- Protective drop cloth — to keep your workspace clean during glue application.
A small rug can take 2–5 hours depending on complexity.
Materials: Cloth, Yarn & Backing
Best choice: Primary tufting cloth (polyester/cotton blend with guide lines) - and that’s exactly what we provide in all Tukloom kits.
Suitable for AK-Ⅰ, AK-V, long pile, and most commercial guns.
Avoid: Linen, canvas, cheap monk’s cloth from craft stores (holes too small)
Common causes:
- Needles too sharp (replace or adjust)
- Cloth stretched unevenly
- Using the wrong cloth
- Punching repeatedly in one spot
Always move steadily; do not tuft in the same point twice.
Recommend:
- Acrylic yarn (affordable, strong)
- Wool yarn (premium, soft)
Avoid thin yarns—thicker yarn produces smoother lines.
We recommend rug latex adhesive or carpet glue.
Do not use white craft glue—it cracks over time.
Finished Rugs: Care & Backing
After applying glue and letting it cure fully, place your fabric (felt, canvas, non-slip backing) and press firmly.
If you choose to machine wash, use a delicate 30°C cycle and take the rug out as soon as the wash ends. Dry it flat on a rack and lightly lift or shake the fibers while it dries to keep the surface smooth.
For regular care, spot cleaning is still recommended to help the rug last longer.
